I am the owner and creator of the Tolowa Gallery. (pronounced 'Tall-o-wah')
I was raised at a place that was once known as 'How-on-quet' on a Native reservation in Smith River, CA (Tolowa Tribe) . Much of my time growing up in the Pacific Northwest was spent on the beach, jumping from log to log or finding coastal junipers tall enough and strong enough to build forts in, high up in the branches where they broke through to the light. We caught butter clams and picked mussels from the rocks, would dip net for smelt in the season, and pick Dungeness Crab up from the surf. It was our grocery, it was the pantry, it is what we knew.
I think the easiest way to describe myself is as 'an enthusiast'...and not just for outdoors. I am a fan of all things related to exploring and learning, teaching and sharing. My passion for photography has grown as my relationship with overlanding, international travel, and marine exploration has increased. For example, I am finding more joy than ever getting to know the birds of the Pacific Northwest, and finally seeing some of my favorite local fauna...in some ways... for the first time.
I am an avid 'maker'. I find woodworking an amazing release for my creative pursuits and love combining CNC with traditional woodworking. I ride adventure motorcycles, I love to play various instruments, draw with pen and ink (perhaps some will find their way to the gallery), and more recently, buying and outfitting a boat to spend more time understanding 'the water' of the Puget Sound and the life that lives in it and on it.
My career in technology and consulting has allowed me to meet many, many unforgettable people, and has shaped my interest in life and in art. I hope what you find on in this gallery makes you 'feel' something, makes you want to be there, makes you want to know more about where it was taken, and perhaps, one day, to visit the place that we shared with you.
Warm Regards,
Jeramey James
